Glass Painting - Triplets of Blessing (Feng Shui Symbol for Luck, Longevity and Prosperity)

I did this painting as a gift to myself. I love doing paintings that has Feng Shui purpose as i usually find such symbols/cures are too expensive to buy and also most of them are not available in the Indian market. And i also have no intention of going to one of those high priced import showrooms. Hence, the need to do my own Feng Shui symbols. This way its economic, a bond to the cure itself since you put your concentration and hard work in to it. For whatever reasons it may be, i love doing Feng Shui based paintings!!!

I am what I am....A Dark Indian Women!!!!

Its a common feeling in India and most of South east Asia that, to be Beautiful is to be Fair skinned. No wonder there are loads of Ads for becoming unrealistically practical over an unrealistic period of seven days. Come on people, use that common sense a bit. Do you really think for the amount of money you are going to spend you can end up with several shades fairer that how you are right now??!!! There is small thing called melanin level that you re born with. This is your natural, born shade. To alter this to greater extent actually harms you in the long run (Try remembering Micheal Jackson). Most of us common people(not celebrities and rich, spoiled brats) don't even think of going for plastic surgeries(cosmetic) thinking thats its not needed or that its not economic or that its not safe but never realize that trying to drastically change our complexion has similar health hazards.

Now lets talk about the Indian mentality regarding complexions.We Indians (the fairer ones especially) make sure that the darker beauties in our country are something to be criticized and looked down. I for myself am a dark beauty. At times I'm dusky and at times I'm just dark! I accepted this fact only a couple of years ago and feeling happy about the revelation.

In North India, this discrimination over you complexion is very blatant. They form lowly opinion of you before they even talk to you, just based on your complexion. i hate this kind of behavior but i never let those cheap-ass skanks to undermine me.

My principle is that you can groom yourself to look better. To have clearer skin without tans and any marks. Now that is a face that will look beautiful irrespective of the complexion. Keep you skin/face acne free, scar free and tan free, groom your eyebrows and keep them in shape. Now look at yourself and ask this, aren't I beautiful???

My inspiration or a role model is a wonderful women, Uma Preva. She is a role model to me because in her i see everything i want to be. To be happy with myself, my complexion and my beauty. And she is one hellava talented women when it comes to grooming herself. I find her makeup skills to be bold, wild, awesome and mainly confident. If you think you have some skin problems that is not letting you shine at you best, consult a dermatologist who will prescribe you the necessary for it. Instead, many people opt for commercially available creams or buy themselves the dermatology based creams without prescription. Don't forget that even though they are creams, they are drugs and taking drugs without doctor's suggestion is definitely not going to do you any good.
I have a perfect case study to explain this point. I used to suffer from inferiority complex because of my dark skin. I would try anything to become even a bit fairer. I even went for all the creams available in the market as well as the ones marketed by Avon, Oriflame and so many other companies but nothing worked. I went to beauty parlours, went for facial after facial. One for removing tan, one for lightening skin and one for???...i don't remember anymore. Still nothing worked. Finally, at last i went to a dermatologist suggested by my friend and discovered that i have sensitive skin where my skin gets easily tanned and takes longer to return to my usual complexion. Without this knowledge in hand, I would still be looking for something or the other to improve my complexion. The Doc then prescribed me some creams that treats my sensitive skin first and asked me to refrain from facials as much as possible. When i look back at all those time i went for facials, bleaches and beauty creams, I cringe at the thought of how much i must have tortured my skin. Now with the skin problems gone and with proper grooming i look my best and most importantly am happy about it.
I' not saying all those expensive creams from reputed companies don't work. All i'm saying is, when the time comes (usually when creams don't work for YOU) consult a dermatologist to know your skin. This is my only advice.
One has to realize (especially women) that beauty is beauty no matter how dark or fair you are. Be who you are and believe you are beautiful!!!

Peacock Glass Painting - Finally Completed!!!!

Hi Folks, This Peacock painting is finally done. Phew!!! What a long journey this has been. Due to the summer heat and my health it took longer than usual to complete this one. The size of the painting including the frames is 36 * 15 Inches This painting is larger than my previous paintings and the first of the large paintings that i have done for myself. I have gifted so many huge sized paintings to my family members but never took time to do one of this size for myself. Believe me!!! And finally this big one is for me. If you had had the chance to look in to my earlier posts about the same painting, i have include the picture of the original canvas painting from which i have derived this glass painting. Though its impossible to recreate every single element from the original picture since its a canvas painting, i have used the key elements. Hope I have done justice to the original painting.
One more note about the painting itself. This painting, actually the Peacock is an auspicious symbols in Feng Shui. Peacock symbolizes good luck and is known to be the incarnation of the celestial Phoenix on Earth. All in all, this painting serves for its aesthetic appeal as well as a Feng Shui Symbols.

A Recipe I tried and Loved!!!!

I was browsing through couple of sites looking for a good recipe that has chicken in it (I just love chicken!!!) and came across this interesting recipe for a dish called 'Kari Ayam (The name itself is interesting isn't it??!! Well it definitely drew me in.) Its a Malaysian dish and is made using a special curry powder. Well, the end result was absolutely mouth watering and my husband loved it :-)

Peacock Glass Paintings - A work in progress!!!

Hi, this is the glass painting i'm currently working on. Due to my health conditions the progress is slow but going on. Hopefully it will be completed in the forth coming months. The size of the painting is 31*22 inches. This is the first large sized painting for myself and my home. Believe it or not, every large sized paintings i ever did were for my parents and relatives. have included most of the details but not in its entirety since its originally a canvas painting. Hopefully, the finished painting will turn out okay.......Fingers crossed!!!

My Love for Cosmetics!!!!

I love cosmetics!!! I simply love them. Just because I love them doesn't mean that i buy them left and right and pile up my personal collection, even thought i would love to do just that. I don't buy them for two reasons; One being 'Money', of course!! and the second being 'Usage'. I'm a home maker and we live away from our home town. As a result, we have very few friends and even fewer chances to go out. The times when we do go out , i make my best attempt to dress up and use my cosmetics. Since there are only fewer opportunities for me to use cosmetics like foundations and lipsticks there is no point in amassing so much cosmetics. My favorite brand of cosmetics is Avon. This is mainly due to its economic prices and variety. I may sound like a cheap skate or ever miser but the truth is i'm just being practical. So there is nothing bad in being that way.

Stop Procrastination - I have this horrible habit of procrastinating things and because I never get most of the things done on time or not done at all. Very basic but very necessary thing to do. Write my diary everyday - As silly as it sounds, I really need to push myself to update everyday events in my diary. The reason being, me being lazy of course!!! Writing my diary would give me an opportunity to reflect my action and events for the day and contemplate on it. It would definitely be more like self analysis. I always address my diary as 'Dear God' as this way I wont be fooling myself with any lies. This is because God knows everything!!!

Groom myself more - Being a lazy person, I have let go off my numerous beauty regimes that i used to do on a regular basis before marriage. I intend to start my routine again. It may be as simple as using Besan on a daily basis to anything advance that may be required. This also includes waxing, pedicures and manicures.

We know that wealth cannot be obtained by sitting idle and be acquired only through hard work. Now, one might ask how Feng Shui would help in one’s pursuit of riches. Feng Shui helps to keep you and your surroundings in tune with the flow of wealth and prosperity in to your home. It aids you by creating an environment that attracts riches to you. I’m not declaring myself as a Feng Shui expert or anything, please…I’m not. I try to learn as much as possible and constantly reading more about them for solving issues related to my home or my friends’ home. Since they are dear to me and my home is precious to me I take utmost care went it comes to employing Feng Shui cures.

Simple Tips:

Keep your home and work place free from clutter and dust. This tip is very practical

Take excellent care of the wealth area of your home and work place. The South East of your home is this wealth area. Let this place be a picture of prosperity. This is visual affirmation. Seeing positive things makes you feel positive.

This place should be well lit. Not too bright or dull.

Let there be a proper flow of air within your home by keeping some windows and doors open. This allows proper flow of Chi or energy. Improper flow of Chi leads to stagnant energy and thereby stagnant prosperity. It is a medical fact that proper flow of air/Oxygen is necessary to have a fresh and active mind.

Place wind chimes in the wealth sector of the home. We unknowingly use wind chimes as decorative items in our home and this also serves as a Feng Shui artefact to promote Chi as these wind chimes acts as activator.

Make sure the front door of your home is Feng Shui proofed. Keep them well lit and clean both the inside as well as outside. Know this is a huge topic by itself and will be covering this soon.

This Feng Shui item is commonly used as a cure for activating wealth. Place the toad in any of the corners diagonally opposite your front door. It is best to have them in 9’s but can also be kept in 3’s or 6’s. At the least two is required. One is for collecting the money and another is for bringing the money home. Keep it in discreet places – Like below the table, behind the couch or other discreet areas in your home. NEVER place them in your bedroom. Remember to place money under the toad to activate them. If you have 9 money toads, keep eight of the toads in each of the eight directions and place one toad as if its hopping its way inside your home from the main door.

The laughing Buddha is the epitome of happiness, prosperity and good health. He is known as Hotei in Japan and Pu-Tai in China. For the people of China, the Laughing Buddha is a deity of abundance and contentment. As you look around both Japan and China, you will see the Laughing Buddha carrying a cloth sack filled with great treasures such as rice plants that represent wealth, food, candy for children, considered the world’s woes. The duty of the Laughing Buddha is to be a strong support to children, as well as people who are weak and poor. In fact, sometimes the Laughing Buddha carries an Oogi (fan), which some say is a wishing fan that was at one time used by aristocracy to tell vassals their request would be granted. There are no restrictions as to where to place. He is happy anywhere and every where and would keep us happy too.

Wealth Ship

Place wealth ships as if they are sailing in to your home. These wealth ships can be placed in any areas of your home but the ships must be of the corresponding element. You can make your own wealth ship by decorating a normal ship figurine with Gold Ingots (faux of course!!) faux gem stones and other precious and wealth look a likes. The ship should be a picture of abundant wealth and the ship it self should be of excellent condition. I find this to be better than buying the Wealth ships available because are too expensive...at least for me and this way there is more fun in decorating.

The South West area of the Bagua belongs to relationships, love, romance and maternal affection. Energising these areas lead to improvement in the above said aspects. Placing these symbols in the assigned areas brings about the flow of chi and thereby energising the area.

Phoenix - Glass Painting

Well i completed this painted after a long time. A lot of things came up and needed to be handled. Hence the delay. I hope this painting came out well. Please do post your comments as your feedback is valuable to me. I was inspired to paint this Phoenix bird after i immersed myself in the world of Feng Shui. Very interesting!!!

According to Feng Shui its very auspicious if a painting or sculpture of a Phoenix bird is placed in the Southern area of the house. Its important that the painting/sculpture should be of red colour. The Phoenix symbolizes luck, opportunity, success, change of luck from bad to good. It brings fame and popularity. It also brings out the excellent side of females. Placing cinnabar coloured Phoenix high on the south wall increases wealth.
Coupling the Phoenix with Dragon, represents fruitful marriage blessed with great deal of success and prosperity as well as many off springs.

Flamenco Dancer - Glass Painting

Hi, I know its been long since i had updated the blog with one of my glass paintings or any about anything else. I really felt that i need to update this painting in my blog. Its yet to be framed and not sure when i will get it done. What i love about this painting is the grace of the dancer and of course the colour of the dress 'Red'. I had completed painting the dancer but was clueless about the back ground. I thought brown gave it a more earthy feeling and i gave this patchy shades of the brown shade. Hope it was good.

My Trip to Kashmir - Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pehalgam

People often relate Kashmir with violence or terrorism but once you actually take a trip there, one would definitely change their views and recommend their friends to visit, just like i did. Kashmir is a place thats filled with greenery and natural beauty and any direction you look at serves you a photo opportunity. This trip is really one of those trips that are really worth remembering and worth revisiting in ones life.
The flight from Delhi to Srinagar is a short trip and travelling with friends made it even shorter. As you get close to Srinagar we can see the beautiful snow capped peaks of the Himalayan ranges. Though we are advised to keep our mobiles switched off, its too much of a temptation to switch them on and click away the beautiful scenery. The sight of snows gives you a preview to all the beautifies that one would see and enjoy in the trip ahead. On landing at Srinagar, the pilot announced that the temperature is zero degree Celsius and is replied with anxious gasps and excited laughter.
The experience in Srinagar airport mirrors somewhat that of the one in the movie 'Roja'. The scene looks intense as the Jawans / CRPF surround the plane. The airport it self looks more like an military installation than as a domestic terminal.From the airport, we headed straight to Hotel Heemal which is owned by Tourism of J&K. It provides a decent place to stay with electric blankets and heaters. They also provide gas heaters for extra charge. Since out trip was in December, we had considerable discount in the lodging fare. One of the perks of staying there was that the place was really close to Dal Lake. December is too cold for places like this, but if you are keen on experience the real deal this is the ideal month to visit. Kashmir is a beautiful place to visit for so many reasons: In summer or any season other than winter, it is lush and breathtakingly beautiful.And in winter its chilling weather and the snow is a good reason to visit during the month of December.
When we visited in December, the lush greenery was missing, so there is no point in visiting the Gardens there.

Dal Lake is a great place to start. The boat rides called 'Shikara' is a romantic experience that every couple must enjoy. The ride in Shikari take a trip about the lake and in the end leads to a lane of bazaars. There are shops for woolen clothes like stoles,Coats, sweaters and woolen Salwar materials. Be aware that the rates are pretty high compared to the ones in the main market. Hoards of vendors selling saffron also plague the tourists in the Shikari but be aware as the rates are lower and the quality of the saffron is also questionable. Dal Lake is a wet land and Its a unique sight to see people settled in the lake living in house boat and they also cultivate floating gardens of greens. If you look at the bed of the lake you can see so much greenery. The locals use these plants while cooking vegetables.
People with high BP be aware and make sure you have your medications with you as the foods contain more salt. This is a common thing to come across and another warning for those panning to try out the local delicacies, Kashmiri teas actual have salt in them.

The next place we visited in Srinagar is the Hazratbal shrine. Woman who are interested in visiting the shrine please follow their custom of covering your hair as the local people find it very offensive to see a woman with her hair uncovered. Also couples visiting the shrine shouldn't get all lovey-dovey and huggy while taking pics, for obvious reason - Its a shrine.

Nigeen Lake is nothing to look at during the winter as the vegetation surrounding the lake is all dried up and doesn't look appealing. After done with Srinagar we moved to Gulmarg.

Gulmarg is an amazing place. It boasts of a beautiful golf field during the summer, spring and autumn season and a snow covered landscape during the winter. Gulmarg is a good place to try out skiing. December is okay if you want to play in snow but the second half of January is great for snowing as there will be fresh snow fit for skiing. A lot of skiing instructors are available to teach the basics. Make sure to know the standard fee for all the amenities like the sledge and skiing so that they don't rob you blind.Another exciting thing to do there is to take a trip in the Gondola/cable car up the mountain. The view is breath taking. The landscape is covered in snow and with pine trees.There are two places to stop on the way to the top, Kongdoori and Afarwat. Afarwat is the highest point of the peak and is the coldest. The total cost to go up to the top in the gondola is about Rs. 800. Below is the view of the valley from the Gondola

There are number of resorts close to the gondola house. Make sure that you book your rooms well in advance as they tend to get booked fast. Food is quite expensive at the places you stop midway during the gondola trip.

Next we headed out to Pahalgam. is a beautiful place surrounded by deodars, firs and pine trees. It is the most tranquil place i have ever been to. If you must get the real experience of the place, visit them when there is least tourist traffic. The serenity of the place captivated me. We stayed at a hotel called Himalayan House. With a murmuring brook right behind our room it is a perfect setting to spend my time in peace amidst the pine forests and beauty of the mountains on the backdrop.

Kashmir is truly a wonderful place to visit. Too bad the lives of the people there are marred by occasional terrorist activities. Kashmir is what they say, ' A Heaven on Earth'. Take time to visit this state and enjoy its beauty. There is so much these places can give you. Before you venture out to other countries try out these places first.

I love this painting of Van Gogh. The Starry night appeals to me as i love the ethereal night view and the breath taking aspect of the beautiful sky. I have taken some artistic liberties to make the sky , which is my favorite part of the painting to make it look even more stunning.I initially thought of making it as a glass painting but later on changed my mind and made it as a reverse glass paintings as i didn't get the required depth or intensity of the color of the sky when using glass paints.

Kufri and Chail - A trip Worth Remembering and way better than Shimla!!!!

Now that you are mesmerized by looking at all these lovely and scenic pics of Kufri and Chail, let me get to nitty gritty details about my trip to these places and my experiences of it.I know there are a million websites to tell you enough about this place. They tell you that April - June is the perfect time....Well i'm not gonna talk about this perfect season instead i'm gonna talk about the month in which i visited... DECEMBER. At 8000 feet above sea level, Kufri is a scenic place to spend your days in perfect ambiance and weather.... normally. People who visit Shimla take a trip further up the hill to Kufri as well as another place called Chail. Unlike Shimla, Kufri and Chail does not have a noisy street or a bustling market. Its a perfect retreat for all those city folks who are sick of the traffic and the noise that comes with it. And also, it is not the kind of place for people who are looking forward to do some shopping. I came to know this under the worst circumstances, when i was looking for a full cake for our wedding anniversary. Needless to say, it was impossible to find it in whole and we actually bought a a lot of cut cakes/pasteries to make a whole cake. Not to fear, Kufri does have the basic necessities of Grocery shops and Pharmacies. Instead of the ordinary and expected expectations of a tourist place, here there is ample opportunities for visual treats and you would be defenitely overwhelmed by the abundant nature sounds surrounding you. Like all places these two places have a best time and a worst time to visit. Actually this factor has to be consider from the point of ones own perspective. I visited Kufri and Chail at the beginning of December. Snow fall were expected any time there. And anyone looking forward to have some fun in the snow, head for this place in the second week of December. There is quite enough places to visit and enjoy but the best part is being able to enjoy a scenic view anywhere in this place.
Kufri boasts of the horse ride to the nearby places, but it killed me to see those pretty horses put through hell. Those local Horse jockeys do tend to get rough with them and also they are made to take several trips to and fro these tourist places. The animal lover is me was moved to tears and there is vowed that i would never ride a horse in tourist places. I just cant imagine the agony of what the animal undergoes. Some say that they are the beast of burden and meant to do this but i just come to think of them like that way and exploiting them shows me who the real beast is. I know..i know....this is a touchy subject for me....
One warning to those who are visiting Kufri, People/tourist operators/taxi drivers qould entice you that Fun World is one of those must-see places. Dont Beleive them. Except for a very little collection of games there is no more fun thing in it. Fun World Aint no fun!!! It's a total waste of money. For the basic entry ticket of Rs. 100 i got in to this theme park kind of place and met with huge disappointment. The ticket also includes a trip to the apple garden. Hello!!! Apple Garden in December is nothing but a bunch of dry twigs... Yeah, There is no apple Season in the bleeding cold of December. Huge disappointment again!!! So next time you wanna see a apple grove, visit this place between July and August because the apples are all harvested and transported to the cold storage by the end of September.
The best thing to do is, stop your taxi in a scenic spot and take some time to enjoy nature and its beauty. Needless to say, it feels amazing and refreshing.

World's Highest Cricket Ground

Place Hotel, Chail.

Next comes Chail. Chail is little more above sea level than Kufri so it gets it little more colder than Kufri. Chail is built on three hills: the Rajgarh hills, Pandhewa hills and the Sadh Tiba. Chail has the world's highest cricket ground and the view from there is awesome. On the other side of the hills are the massive Himalayan ranges and its breath taking. Again, Chail is covered in snow only after second week of December. So make sure what you want to enjoy; Be it snow or the breath taking scenery, wear warm clothes accordingly and protect yourself. The other place i loved was the Palace Hotel. It was amazing. Truly isolated and set in the middle of greenery, it was a serene experience. I'm sure you would have come to know about the other facts and information about this place, so need to repeat over and over again. It was a place of many photo opportunities and we were clicking away like crazy. Nothing ends the day like having a steaming cup of tea and a beautiful sunset to go with it. It made me feel content and happy just being there....

A word of caution!!! If you are interested to buy wine or champaign or ceder buy them in Shimla because they cheat you like crazy in Chail and Kufri - Learnt that the hard way. Take care and have fun.....

After a long casual browsing of youTube, i came across some Asian horror movies. As soon as i sampled to some of the movies, i got hooked to them. They are too good and spine chilling unlike the so many american or western scary movies i have come across. We have seen the sudden outburst of remakes of Asian horrors but nothing beats the originals. Be it Ju-on or the more recent one Shutter, the original movies are way too cool and rocks!!!
Here is a list of movies that i have watched and liked them. Some are too good and some are watchable. Some people might argue that Asian horrors movie is mostly all about some dead chick with long black hair but they are not aware that very factor that you are aware of will scare the crap out of you. By that way, i love their hair. It's just too elegant and feminine. No amount of straightening my hair can bring out the natural way their hair looks. Red Shoes - Asian Horror Movie Review

I saw this movie Red Shoe and loved it. Some find this boring and predictable and least bit scary. But not me. I find Asian movies especially Japanese movies to be subtle and involve usemotionally. They don't always employ tactics that are visually scaring but go for spine chilling sound scores and reverberating story line. The story makes you think in a deeper level. This movie 'Red Shoe' revolves around a shoe that's actually pink in colour. Many fail to understand that the colour in movie title is not the shoe colour it self but the danger behind it.

I have read many blogs about this movie where people ask me why the shoe chose the main character in the movie. After seeing this movie, i did realise that the lead character and the femaleheroine character from the past share the same feelings of betrayal and possessiveness. Below is the review from the website that i find to be most accurate and the details have been mentioned to the T.

The Red Shoes is a Korean horror movie loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale of the same name. This story is about Sun-jae, a young woman with a penchant for elegant shoes. Her life spirals out of control after she finds a nice pair of pink high-heeled shoes on a subway platform. Everyone that sees Sun-jae's new shoes instantly becomes obsessed with them and tries at all costs to take them away from her. Sun-jae's friends and family quickly find out that trying to take the shoes away from her has horrific consequences, almost as if the shoes themselves had chosen Sun-jae to be their owner.

Perhaps the most noticeable quality of this movie is its score. Lee Byung-woo's music is haunting and perfectly matched with the atmosphere of this film. There are several scenes where the score is the scariest element and if the scene were silent, it would be completely harmless. In other horror movies, sudden, jarring noises in the score are coupled with sharp camera cuts to startle the audience which is ineffective and amateurish. In The Red Shoes this technique is used so well that it is nearly impossible to watch this movie and not jump at least once.

The production design by Lim Hyung-tae and Jang Pak-ha is equally as important as the music. The sets are dark and the light that is present in the sets is mainly fluorescent. This gives the movie a cold, helpless feel that subtly helps the audience to identify with the victims. The titular red shoes are actually more of a pink color throughout the majority of the film. Whenever the shoes claim a victim, they turn a shade of red that is so bright and vibrant that they seem to glow. This change mirrors the intensity of the scene and gives the shoes an ominous quality that adds a great deal to the experience of this film.

It is true that a lot of the scare tactics in The Red Shoes have been done before. This movie even has the obligatory ghost girl with long black hair that plagues so many Asian horror films. Very seldom does a movie come along that can use all of the standard techniques so effectively that their derivative nature is largely overlooked. Kim Yong-gyun's The Red Shoes is a perfect example of well-done Asian horror and is a movie where the whole truly is greater than the sum of its parts.

Melting and pouring gel candles

· Don't even attempt to melt gel wax in a double boiler as it will take forever!

· You must also be careful not to get steam or water in the gel. The recommended method is an electrical pot with a temperature control such as a presto pot (Available in Walmart) The alternative method is in a pan on direct heat. If you use this method it is essential to watch the gel closely as it melts and keep an eye on the temperature. If it gets too hot and begins to smoke it has the Possibility of bursting into flames.

NEVER leave melting wax unattended

· A good temperature to work with for adding colour is between 215°F, then cool to around 203-210°F for pouring. Add the scent just before you pour the gel and stir it in well. Do not allow the temperature to exceed 230°F - the gel will not burn, but it has the possibility of igniting if you heat to extreme temperatures.

· Melt the gel, then add your colour and scent. It is entirely up to you whether you do all of this in your melter or in a pouring pot. A pouring pot can be anything from a glass jug, plastic jug or old coffee can. I recommend using a clear jug as you can see exactly the colour that you are achieving as you add your dye.

· Pour the gel carefully into the container and leave approximately 1/2" at the top to protect the flame from drafts. The hotter the wax/gel, the fewer bubbles your candle will have.

· Any gel left in the pan can be peeled off and re-used ... there is no waste!!

MINIMISING BUBBLES

· · When you pour the gel, pour it as hot as you can safely do so (210°F) and pour it carefully. Don't try to be hasty as you will create air bubbles as you pour.

· · Heat your glassware for a couple of minutes in a 175°F oven immediately before pouring.

· · If you are embedding things like glass miniatures or shells, make sure they are clean and dry, and dip them into gel before placing them in the glass. Shells

· have tiny crevices where the air can get trapped and result in air bubbles.

· · Don't stir the gel with a wooden spoon. Aside from the risk of wood splinters in

· your candle, it will also create more bubbles.

· One of the aspects that makes gel candles so stunningly appealing is the ability to embed objects into the candle that are visible through the transparent gel. From glass, to wax, to ceramic and plaster; embedded items can increase not only the attractiveness of your candle, but also it's perceived value.

· Items that are non flammable - plastic, wood, resin and fabric etc are all extremely flammable and should not be used.

· Another important thing to remember is to place your embedded items right up against the edge of the glass. This not only gives your items better visibility, but keeping them away from the wick will mean your candle will be safer and burn for longer.

· If you are embedding wax, my recommendation is to pour the gel first and then embed the wax items. This gives you the least chance of the embeds melting. Make sure the wax embeds are clean and do not have any wick. Coat them with warm gel before placing into the candle right up against the edge of the glass as this will help to prevent air pockets.

· As always, before making a large batch of anything …. Test, test, test!!!!!!

Making candles at home Part 2 - Pressed Flower, Layered & Ice candles

Make sure to pay more attention to capitalised sentences and cautionary statements in Red as these are for your own safety and the tips in Yellow for making better candles.

Making Pressed Flower Candles

· · 3" or 6" pillar candle-white or off white (3" diameter)

· · Pressed herbs and flowers:

· · (Petals of any flat pressed flowers)

· · Votive candle - white or off-white

· · Paint brush

· · Old pot to heat wax in

Heat votive candle in the old pan until melted. Use a votive that is the same colour as the pillar candle that is used.

Arrange flower petals on table to a suitable design for your candle unless you will be placing them on the candle randomly. Take your small paint brush and dab a little melted wax onto candle where you plan on placing first flower. Quickly place flower on top of dap of wax.

Do these with you whole design, making sure you get just a THIN layer of wax on the top of the flower candle.

When finished with design, brush a THIN layer of melted wax over whole design.

Allow the candle to cool either at room temperature or in a refrigerator.

Layered Candles Instructions

Centre the wick into a mould of the desired height.

Layered candles are very easy to make. Pour the first colour and allow to cool completely.

Pour the second colour hot. It needs to be poured hot so that the candle won't have lines or air pockets between them.

Allow the candle to cool completely and pour a third layer.

Ice Candles

Ice candles are easy to make. The idea is to by put ice into the mould layer by layer.

First the wick is covered with wax then ice is added. You can also use a candle as your core base. The difference is that you will have a longer burning candle if you use the core candle.

When you burn this type of candle it is very important to put a LARGE dish underneath it.

To make your first candle you will need:-

· Double boiler.

· 139-145mp paraffin wax

· Vybar

· Stearic Acid

· Candle Mould

· Mould seal / blue tack / plumbers putty

· Wick (type of wick depends on size of mold - check with your supplier)

· Colour block or liquid dye

· Candle fragrance oil

· Pouring jug

Please make sure you have read the safety instructions before starting.

STEP 1

Calculate the amount of wax needed by filling the mould with water and measuring 3 ounces of wax are needed for every 3 1/2 ounces of water.

STEP 2

Put the wax into the top of the double boiler and fill the bottom part approximately 1/3 full of water. Heat it on a medium setting on your stove top. If the water begins to boil rapidly, reduce heat to a gentle boil to prevent water from splashing into the container.

STEP 3

Melt the wax to the correct temperature. For this particular candle you want to aim for 180°F. Dip the thermometer into the wax to check the temp, but do not let the thermometer touch the bottom of the pan as you will get a false reading.

STEP 4

Prime your wick. This is done by placing the required length of wick into the melted wax until it starts to release bubbles. This means that it has absorbed sufficient wax. Carefully remove it (not using your fingers - the wax is hot! I use an old knitting needle or tweezers) and pull it tight then place it to dry flat. The reason for doing this is so that the top of the wick (top of the candle) is well waxed and will be easier to light. It also makes threading it through the wick hole in the mould much easier.

STEP 5

When the wick is hard (only takes a couple of minutes) insert it through the small hole at the top of the mould and pull it through. Secure it around a pencil or wick support at the open end and plug up the small hole with mould seal to prevent the wax from leaking out.

STEP 6

When you have reached the desired temperature, add your additives. For a basic candle you will want 3TBS Stearic acid and 1/2tsp Vybar to 1lb wax, so if you have an 8oz mould, use 1.5TBS Stearic acid and 1/4 tsp Vybar. When the additives have completely dissolved, add your colour. If you are using colour blocks, shave a small amount off and stir it in. Add more if required. It is easier to darken the colour than it is to take dye out!

STEP 7

Just before you get ready to pour the candle, add the fragrance oil. The typical usage for a strongly scented candle is 1 ounce of scent to 1lb wax.

****Stir it for least two minutes but do not stir too vigorously as you will only put too much air into the wax.

STEP 8

If you are using a metal mould, preheat it before pouring the wax. This can either be done in a low temp oven (seamless moulds only) or giving it a blast all over with a blow torch / heat gun. Then use the pouring jug to pour into your mould.

STEP 9

Before the wax sets, tap the sides of the mould several times. This is done to release the trapped air bubbles that will mar the surface of your finished candle.

STEP 10

10. When wax has set to a tacky consistency, poke small holes in the candle around the wick. This will help to prevent great big air pockets inside the finished candle that can be a fire hazard.

STEP 11

11. Leave to set for a few hours. You can place the candle in a water bath to cool quicker, but if you do this, make sure that the water is deep enough to go all the way up the mould or you will find a water line around your candle. Also ensure not to get any water in the setting wax.

STEP 12

Your candle will need a re-pour because wax retracts and shrinks as it cools. Melt your left over wax if you have any, otherwise melt and colour some more and top up your mould. That's it! When it is set, remove it from the mould.

You may want to level off the bottom of your candle to make it smooth and even. This is easily done by heating the top part of your double boiler or your top saucepan and carefully placing the candle in it. Move it around a few times so that the bottom is nice and even and then carefully remove.

Be careful of the steam from the boiling water as you can easily be burned doing this.

******Leave for at least one hour before lighting because I know you will be dying to test it out!! You should really allow 48 hours before lighting, especially for scented candles as it allows the candle to "cure" and the scent to bind in with the wax.

Making candles at home Part 1 - Floating, Gel & Container candles

Floating Candles Recipe

· · 1/2 pound (4oz or 125 g)
· · Candle wax
· · Candle dye
· · Fragrance of choice
· · Candle wick - medium lead free wire
· · 4 Suitable candle moulds (approx 2-3 in. diameter)

Prepare your moulds and centre your candle wick into the moulds. Melt the candle wax in the double boiler or tin can in a pan of water, on your stove top

over a medium high heat and add your colour one drop at a time until the desired tint is reached.

Remove the melted wax from heat, add fragrance, and allow it to cool for only 15 to 20 seconds. Now, carefully pour your wax into prepared moulds and allow to completely cool before removing from molds.

CAUTION: Never leave melting wax unattended on you stove top, when heating as overheated wax is flammable.

*****Floating candles in a clear bowl creates an extra special lighting effect. Using distilled water eliminates mineral build up on the side of crystal or glass, preserving its unique presentation of floating candles.

Container Candles Recipe

· · ¼ pound (4 oz or 125 g)

· · Candle wax (to fit 6 oz container size)

· · Wax crayon, colour of choice

· · Fragrance of choice

· · Candle wick 1 inch longer that the height of your container

· · Heat resistant glass container

· · Double boiler or suitable tin can in pan of water

Prepare your candle container. Centre your candle wick (I prefer medium lead free wire candle wicking) into your glass container. Let a drop or two of your favourite scent roll down the wick from top to bottom.

Melt the candle wax in the double boiler or tin can in a pan of water, on your stove top over a medium high heat, add pieces of your crayon and stir into the candle wax.

Note: The colour will intensify as the wax cools.

Remove the melted wax from heat and allow it to cool for about 1 minute. Then add 6 to 9 drops of your favourite scent to it.

Now, carefully pour your wax into prepared container. Reserve some of the wax - as when your candle cools it will shrink away from the centre around the wick. When it is cold you would want to reheat the reserved wax and pour into the depression around the wick to even out your candle top. Allow it to cool.

*****A candle will burn more slowly and evenly if it's refrigerated before using it. Wrap the candle in plastic or foil before refrigerating to prevent wicks from absorbing moisture.

Gel Candles Recipe

· · Measuring Cup

· · 25 Grams CP9000 Resin

· · 2 Cups Mineral Oil

· · Heat resistant glass container(s)

Mix Resin and Mineral Oil together. Let the mixed ingredients be set at room temperature for approximately 1 hour.

Then, heat that mixture to 200 F (Absolutely important - DO NOT GO OVER THAT TEMPERATURE.)

After approximately 1 hour the mixture will have the consistency of corn syrup.

Add fragrance, not more than 3% as adding to much will make the gel more flammable.

Add Colour.

Dip wick base in the gel and place it at the bottom of the container and hold in place until gel sets to the glass.

Now, pour in gel. If the gel cools slightly before you pour, you will get bubbles. The cooler the wax, the more bubbles.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT BUBBLES, THEN POUR YOU GEL IMMEDIATELY.

After candle has been set for approximately 3 minutes you can drop in NON-FLAMMIBLE objects ie. Artificial fruit pieces, sea shells, beads, seeds whatever.

****Keep lit candles out of drafts as drafts create large flames and thereby shortening the burning time.

I did this painting for my father in law. He wanted me to do a painting for him. We chose this as it looked soothing to the eyes. The size of the painting is 20 * 25 inches. It's quite huge and haven't yet framed it. It is going to hang in my in laws home at Coimbatore.

My trip to the crocodile bank on the Eact Coast Road was memorable since i had gone with my husband (Back then my fiance). I always loved crocs, theres something about them that intrigues me. Not just that, the mere sight of seeing hundreds of these millenuim dions just lying around and basking in the sun gives me a rush. They are awesome to look at and powerful reptiles. The sight of a croc with its mouth wide open hushes down the kids as well as the adults. The CB(short for Crocodile Bank) has a huge collection of different varieties of crocs and is being maintained (hope thats the correct word for it) by William Whitaker. Yeah, that the guy who loves snakes too!!!. He is incharge of the conservative efforts to protect these amazing reptiles. There is an underwater aquarium which had this freakish looking Gharial in it. One could almost feel as if they are in the water with them. Needless to say, this experience gave me a good fright. I have picture to validate this point. Visitors can take pictures of themselves holding snakes (I held a python.....okay a baby python) and tortoise. I held a really really cute and small tortoise. Over all one can have fun filled trip to CB. Add this places to your list of places to visit in Chennai as you re surely bound to enjoy it.

I love my cats!!!!! Over a period of eight years we had over twenty cats. I love each and everyone of those guys. I love talking to them and playing with them. They de-stress me and they are a good companion when i am alone. The importance of pet to one's mental health is enormous. I owe my gratitude to my cats as they helped me keep my cool in times of sorrows, stress and fear. All pet lovers would vouch for me when i say that pets have magical properties. Its like once you bond with them we enter a realm that solely belongs to the pet and the person. I would dare not call the person as 'Owner' as we can never own another soul but live in harmony with them. Cats are just like people, each having their own personality. I have a cat called Sylvester. He is a tom cat and a grumpy one. Always making noise when entering a room and would inform everyone of his grumpiness. Another cat of mine, Hero is a adorable guy. I named him hero because of what he did when he was a kitten. When someone used to shoo way the kittens, this guy would come racing towards the person instead of running away from them. He is a good looker too. Where composed and well mannered. I have a new batch of kittens -4 of them. Two browns and two mixed colours of black and orange and brown. I love these guys and miss them a lot now. Yeah!!!, i moved to another state and my cats are living with my parents now. Cant wait to have my own cats!!!!
